Measure my What?

Jon Henke at the Nextright points to an article at the Cristian Science Monitor outlining the waistline police in Japan.  More importantly though there is an interesting give and take in the comments section.  You’ve got your normal “anti-free market” types and some “health-care is a right” nuts.  By far though the must read is when the author of the original article surfaces and starts batting away the objections and misconceptions and like Mark McGuire in his juicing days:

1) We don’t currently have a free market in health care and health insurance. Health care is one of the most heavily-regulated sectors of the economy. Insurance companies are under numerous regulations specifying who they must cover, what benefits they must offer, and what sorts of prices they may charge. In Massachusetts, you have to purchase health insurance with in vitro fertilization benefits and alcoholism treatment benefits, regardless of whether you want it or not. This is like the government forcing car manufacturers to sell (and customers to purchase) child car safety seats, even if the buyer has no kids.

He goes on to negate everyone of the points that most people make for Universal Healthcare.  Seriously, get over there and read the full length comments…

Somehow I missed this post, but I read all the comments today. Good read. The last comment socked me in the gut though:

It is foolish to think that all aspects of society are best served by the open market. Opening up every problem to be solved by people seeking profit is not the answer to our most important problems.
